Super Toscaanse Wijnen

De term Super Tuscan verwijst naar een rode blend uit Toscane die gemaakt is van internationale druivensoorten zoals Cabernet Sauvignon of Merlot in plaats van inheemse Italiaanse druiven zoals Sangiovese. De eerste rode Super Tuscan wijnen verschenen in de jaren 1970, waaronder de twee beroemdste namen, Tignanello en Sassicaia, toen lokale wijnmakers experimenteerden met deze andere druivensoorten. Vandaag de dag zijn Super Tuscan wijnen vaak krachtige rode wijnen die vele tientallen jaren in de kelder kunnen rijpen.

Belangrijke Super Toscaanse Regio's

Binnen Toscane is de subregio Bolgheri, dicht bij de kust, bijzonder belangrijk voor Super Toscaanse wijnen. Hier zijn zowel Sassicaia als Antinori, het wijnhuis dat Tignanello produceert, gevestigd. De regio kreeg zijn eigen officiële appellation in 1994 met regels die stellen dat de wijn tot 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot of Cabernet Franc mag bevatten. Er zijn nu meer dan 50 Super Toscaanse wijnhuizen in de Bolgheri appellation.

Super Toscaanse gerechten

Dankzij hun robuuste en intense smaakprofiel gaan Super Toscaanse wijnen het beste samen met stevige gerechten zoals de klassieke lokale stoofpot van wild zwijn of bistecca alla fiorentina. Andere goede combinaties zijn belegen kazen zoals Pecorino Toscano of een royaal bord Italiaanse vleeswaren.
