A Birthday to Remember with DAOU & Colomé Celebrating my mother’s birthday was made even more special thanks to two incredible wines—DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 and Colomé Auténtico Malbec 2020. The star of the evening was undoubtedly the DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon. From the first sip, it enveloped us in its rich, velvety embrace. The deep dark fruit flavors, hints of cocoa, and perfectly balanced oak made every glass feel like a true indulgence. It was bold yet elegant, a wine that effortlessly brought warmth and joy to our gathering. Seeing my mother savor each sip with a smile made it all the more memorable. The Colomé Auténtico Malbec also delivered beautifully, with its pure expression of high-altitude Malbec. It was powerful, with ripe blackberries, spice, and a smooth, lingering finish—an excellent complement to the evening. These wines didn’t just enhance our meal; they became part of the celebration, elevating every toast and conversation. A heartfelt thank you to DAOU and Colomé for making this special occasion truly unforgettable!

    Rockford winery is gevestigd in een schilderachtige verzameling van stenen gebouwen, net buiten het dorp Krondorf in de Barossa Range. Het werd opgericht in de jaren 1980 door Robert O'Callaghan en is uitgegroeid tot een top producent van Cabernet Sauvignon en Shiraz/Syrah wijnen, en een van Australië's bekendste traditionele wijnmakerijen.

    Degenen bij Rockford hanteren een hands-on, ouderwetse aanpak van het wijnmaken. Ze gebruiken mandpersen, open betonnen gistkuipen en een Bagshaw druivenpletter uit de jaren 1880, om een prachtig assortiment van veelgeprezen Australische rode wijnen te maken.

    De Rod & Spur Cabernet-Shiraz blend is een knipoog naar klassieke Australische rode wijnen uit de jaren 1950 en 1960. Een boeket van zwart en rood fruit, cederhout en honing stijgt op uit de fles. De druiven zijn afkomstig uit Eden Valley. Ze worden apart gerijpt in vaten van Frans en Amerikaans eikenhout, gedurende twee jaar. Rod & Spur is opvallend donker robijnrood in het glas, met dominante smaken van donkere kersen en frambozen, vergezeld van subtiele eikenhout en cassis elementen. Dit is een kans om een uitgesproken Australische blend te proeven, geboren toen de wijnbouw in het land nog in opkomst was. Combineer hem met een kruidig lamsrack of een kaasachtige paddenstoelenschotel.
