A Birthday to Remember with DAOU & Colomé Celebrating my mother’s birthday was made even more special thanks to two incredible wines—DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 and Colomé Auténtico Malbec 2020. The star of the evening was undoubtedly the DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon. From the first sip, it enveloped us in its rich, velvety embrace. The deep dark fruit flavors, hints of cocoa, and perfectly balanced oak made every glass feel like a true indulgence. It was bold yet elegant, a wine that effortlessly brought warmth and joy to our gathering. Seeing my mother savor each sip with a smile made it all the more memorable. The Colomé Auténtico Malbec also delivered beautifully, with its pure expression of high-altitude Malbec. It was powerful, with ripe blackberries, spice, and a smooth, lingering finish—an excellent complement to the evening. These wines didn’t just enhance our meal; they became part of the celebration, elevating every toast and conversation. A heartfelt thank you to DAOU and Colomé for making this special occasion truly unforgettable!

    Bernard Podlashuk en zijn vrouw Fredagh kochten het Bellingham landgoed aan het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Op dat moment was het landgoed in een staat van verwaarlozing en dus restaureerden de Podlashuks het landhuis en de oude kelder met een team van Italiaanse krijgsgevangenen. Hoewel Bernard geen ervaring had in de wijnbouw, hielpen zijn gedurfde en buitenissige ideeën de geschiedenis van de Zuid-Afrikaanse wijn vorm te geven, waardoor hij de eerste was die een Shiraz van één soort in Zuid-Afrika produceerde. Zijn Almeida Rosé en Premier Grand Cru zijn legendarische wijnen.

    Bellingham De Bernard Series Basket Press Syrah is een eerbetoon aan de oprichter van Bellingham, Bernard Podlashuk. De druiven werden met de hand geselecteerd en geoogst in twee wijngaarden op diepe, goed gedraineerde leisteenbodems bedekt met afgebroken graniet. De wijn, die ook een zeer klein percentage Viognier bevat, rijpt 12 maanden in Franse eiken vaten.

    De kleur is dicht en met een pruimtint en robijnrode reflecties aan de randen. In de neus ruikt de wijn naar bessen zoals bramen en moerbeien, met tonen van zwarte kersen en pure chocolade en delicate kruidige tonen. In de mond is de wijn sappig en rijk met intense fruitsmaken en fluweelzachte tannines. De afdronk is aanhoudend en herinnert aan tonen van chocolade. Hij past uitstekend bij Tandoori kip, biefstuk en rijke vegetarische bereidingen.
