    Canadese Wijnen

    Canadese wijnen zijn buiten het land niet zo bekend, maar wie ze wel ontdekt, staat een echte traktatie te wachten. Dankzij het koele klimaat produceert Canada veel van 's werelds beste ijswijnen en elegante mousserende en droge witte wijnen. De eerste commerciële Canadese wijnmakerij werd halverwege de 19e eeuw geopend en vandaag de dag zijn er meer dan 800 producenten met een vergunning.

    Belangrijkste Canadese wijngebieden

    Aangezien een groot deel van het land ongeschikt is voor wijnbouw, is de Canadese wijnbouw geconcentreerd in twee belangrijke regio's, Ontario en British Columbia. Ontario alleen al heeft twee derde van de wijngaarden van het land en maakt meer dan 90% van de Canadese ijswijnen. De bekendste subregio in Ontario is het schiereiland Niagara, dat de beste Canadese knapperige en aromatische witte wijnen produceert, evenals intense, zoete ijswijnen door de druiven aan de wijnstok te laten bevriezen.

    Canadese druivenrassen

    Vanwege het koude klimaat planten Canadese wijnmakers vaak winterharde hybride druivensoorten aan, zoals Vidal, die vaak wordt gebruikt voor het maken van ijswijnen. Deze overvloedige Canadese zoete topwijnen passen goed bij blauwe kazen, desserts op basis van fruit of kruidige gerechten. Voor witte wijnen zijn Riesling en Gewurztraminer geschikt voor de koelere omstandigheden, terwijl Merlot, Pinot Noir en Cabernet Franc typische druiven zijn voor Canadese rode wijnen.
