A Birthday to Remember with DAOU & Colomé Celebrating my mother’s birthday was made even more special thanks to two incredible wines—DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 and Colomé Auténtico Malbec 2020. The star of the evening was undoubtedly the DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon. From the first sip, it enveloped us in its rich, velvety embrace. The deep dark fruit flavors, hints of cocoa, and perfectly balanced oak made every glass feel like a true indulgence. It was bold yet elegant, a wine that effortlessly brought warmth and joy to our gathering. Seeing my mother savor each sip with a smile made it all the more memorable. The Colomé Auténtico Malbec also delivered beautifully, with its pure expression of high-altitude Malbec. It was powerful, with ripe blackberries, spice, and a smooth, lingering finish—an excellent complement to the evening. These wines didn’t just enhance our meal; they became part of the celebration, elevating every toast and conversation. A heartfelt thank you to DAOU and Colomé for making this special occasion truly unforgettable!

    Glaetzer is opgericht in 1995 door Colin Glaetzer die wijn maakte op Barossa Valley Estate voordat hij besloot zijn eigen wijnen te maken en te bottelen. Colin's zoon, Ben, trad in de voetsporen van zijn vader en werd in 2004 op 26-jarige leeftijd uitgeroepen tot Qantas Young Winemaker of the Year. Ben is nu wijnmaker bij Glaetzer, waar hij zich specialiseert in het maken van kleine hoeveelheden Barossa wijnen van topkwaliteit uit de noordelijke Ebenezer subregio.

    Glaetzer experimenteert momenteel met zo'n 35 verschillende druivensoorten om te zien welke het beste passen bij het lokale terroir, maar Shiraz heerst in de Barossa, zoals in deze iconische botteling die is vernoemd naar de koning van alle goden in de Egyptische mythologie. De druiven zijn afkomstig van 50-130 jaar oude wijnstokken in Ebenezer en het fruit wordt gevinifieerd in open-top fermentoren. De jonge wijn rijpt vervolgens 16 maanden in nieuwe Franse eiken vaten. De wijn wordt gebotteld zonder filtering om het pure natuurlijke karakter van de druiven en het terroir vast te leggen.

    Het resultaat is een knappe, krachtige Shiraz met een inktpaarse tint en intense aroma's van cassis, bramen en pruimen, gekruid met zwarte peper. De eerste slok onthult een robuuste volle body, stevige tannines en een stijve structuur die goed zal reageren op extra opslag. Bewaar hem nog een decennium of geniet er nu van naast stevige stoofschotels van rundvlees, gebarbecuede ribbetjes of rijke wildgerechten.
