A Birthday to Remember with DAOU & Colomé Celebrating my mother’s birthday was made even more special thanks to two incredible wines—DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 and Colomé Auténtico Malbec 2020. The star of the evening was undoubtedly the DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon. From the first sip, it enveloped us in its rich, velvety embrace. The deep dark fruit flavors, hints of cocoa, and perfectly balanced oak made every glass feel like a true indulgence. It was bold yet elegant, a wine that effortlessly brought warmth and joy to our gathering. Seeing my mother savor each sip with a smile made it all the more memorable. The Colomé Auténtico Malbec also delivered beautifully, with its pure expression of high-altitude Malbec. It was powerful, with ripe blackberries, spice, and a smooth, lingering finish—an excellent complement to the evening. These wines didn’t just enhance our meal; they became part of the celebration, elevating every toast and conversation. A heartfelt thank you to DAOU and Colomé for making this special occasion truly unforgettable!

    Een van Rioja's beste producenten van rode wijnen in traditionele stijl, het verhaal van La Rioja Alta begint in 1890 toen vijf lokale wijnmakersfamilies besloten hun krachten te bundelen om hun kwaliteitswijnen buiten de Spaanse grenzen te exporteren. Het nieuwe wijnhuis bevond zich vlak bij het treinstation van Haro, waardoor ze hun verkoop snel konden uitbreiden naar buurland Frankrijk. Vandaag de dag is het domein uitgegroeid tot 300 hectare wijngaarden verspreid over de Rioja Alta regio, maar nog steeds met behoud van dat vroege streven naar uitmuntendheid en het vieren van lokale wijnbouwtradities.

    De Gran Reserva 890 is La Rioja Alta's vlaggenschip wijn en herdenkt de oprichtingsdatum van het wijnhuis. De cuvee bestaat voornamelijk uit Tempranillo van eigen wijngaarden in Briñas, Villalba en Labastida, samen met een klein beetje Mazuelo en Graciano. De druiven voor deze botteling worden zorgvuldig geselecteerd in de wijngaard in kleine koelboxen en zorgvuldig gevinifieerd in temperatuurgecontroleerde tanks.

    De wijnmakers selecteren vervolgens alleen de beste van de jonge wijnen om ze 6 jaar te laten rijpen in Amerikaanse eiken vaten die La Rioja Alta zelf maakt in hun eigen kuiperij. Vervolgens wordt de uiteindelijke blend gekozen en wordt de wijn gebotteld, klaar om vrijgegeven te worden. Deze nauwgezette aandacht voor detail en uitgebreide rijping helpt bij het produceren van een immens verouderde Rioja met stevige tannines, een robuuste structuur en intense lagen van weelderig donker fruit, kruiden, gebakken aarde en leer. Ideaal om nog een decennium of twee te bewaren, hoewel hij ook nu kan worden gedronken met stevige rode vleesgerechten.

    Hun Gran Reserva 890 is het vlaggenschip van La Rioja Alta en herdenkt de oprichtingsdatum van het wijnhuis.
