A Birthday to Remember with DAOU & Colomé Celebrating my mother’s birthday was made even more special thanks to two incredible wines—DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 and Colomé Auténtico Malbec 2020. The star of the evening was undoubtedly the DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon. From the first sip, it enveloped us in its rich, velvety embrace. The deep dark fruit flavors, hints of cocoa, and perfectly balanced oak made every glass feel like a true indulgence. It was bold yet elegant, a wine that effortlessly brought warmth and joy to our gathering. Seeing my mother savor each sip with a smile made it all the more memorable. The Colomé Auténtico Malbec also delivered beautifully, with its pure expression of high-altitude Malbec. It was powerful, with ripe blackberries, spice, and a smooth, lingering finish—an excellent complement to the evening. These wines didn’t just enhance our meal; they became part of the celebration, elevating every toast and conversation. A heartfelt thank you to DAOU and Colomé for making this special occasion truly unforgettable!

    Na lange ervaringen met beroemde wijnhuizen in zowel Frankrijk als Californië, besloten de twee oenologische echtgenoten Philippe en Cherie Melka in 1996 hun eigen label te beginnen. Sindsdien heeft het Melka landgoed zich gericht op het produceren van wijnen die het unieke karakter van de site en het terroir laten zien, waaronder de CJ Cabernet en drie single-vineyard Metisse wijnen (Jumping Goat, Martinez, en Montbleau).

    CJ Cabernet Sauvignon is een overwegend Cabernet Sauvignon blend, met toevoegingen van Cabernet Franc, Merlot en Petit Verdot. De druiven komen voornamelijk van de Evans en Broken Rock wijngaarden, gelegen in Soda Canyon, een uniek gebied in de Napa Valley nabij Oakville, en van andere wijngaarden waarmee het wijnhuis al ongeveer 20 jaar samenwerkt. Deze wijn wordt geproduceerd in beperkte hoeveelheden (ongeveer 1500 kisten) en rijpt 22 maanden in 40% nieuw Frans eikenhout.

    Het is een krachtige en rijke wijn, met een complex aromatisch profiel van rood en zwart fruit (aardbei, framboos en aalbes), bergkruiden en tabaksbladeren. In de mond is de wijn intens sappig, met dikke, soepele tannines en een lange afdronk met tonen van pruimen en leer. Lekker bij een Texaanse barbecue of rijke wildgerechten.
