Sashi Moorman and his wife Melissa first started making wines under the Piedrasassi label in California in 2003. The duo specialise in elegant cool climate Syrah which remind of the great red wines of the Northern Rhone. They source their grapes from the coolest parts of Santa Barbara County including Ballard Canyon, the Santa Rita Hills and Arroyo Grande.

This stunning single vineyard Syrah begins life in a plot just seven miles from the ocean where fogs and cool breezes help to preserve freshness in the grapes and ensure a long ripening season. The 35 year old vines planted here are ungrafted which helps to produce wonderfully concentrated and pure fruit. The grapes are fermented using wild yeasts and the young wine matures in 500 litre barrels to give a subtle touch of oak without overwhelming the varietal character.

The result is a characterful and spicy Syrah which opens with rich dark fruit notes and hints of leather, dried herbs and licorice. The first sip reveals a generous full body, smooth tannins and a powerful structure which will respond well to cellaring. A fantastic partner to barbecued meats, roast beef or a prime steak.
