The Altare family purchased their estate in La Morra in 1948 when the land was planted with Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto vines as well as an abundance of peach, apple, and hazelnut trees. During the economic crisis experienced throughout Italy in the 1970s Elio Altare decided to travel to Burgundy to see how winemakers in the region had achieved their lofty reputation for quality.

Elio’s new insights and visions gave way to a lighter, elegant style of winemaking which has won the estate the respect of top wine critics all over the globe. In 2016 ownership was transferred to Elio’s daughter, Silvia, who seeks to carry on the family winemaking traditions while making her own mark on the estate.

The family’s L’Insieme is one of eight different wines which are produced under the same label by eight of Barolo’s top producers. Each estate produces their own wine and 5 euros from the sale of each bottle goes into a fund which supports charitable causes all over the world. The Elio Altare L’Insieme is aged in new French oak barrels for 18 months which results in an intense, full bodied blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Syrah, and Petit Verdot.
