100% Prieto Picudo. Drink this Gamonal now, although a decent vacation in the cellar would, more than likely, taste very, very good on this wine. Right now, upon first sight, this Gamonal creates dense tears on the glass and is a richly-pigmented garnet color with flashes of dark cherry red throughout.

Mature fruit aromas tinged with smoky wood from barrel aging permeate the nose. This Prieto Picudo is bold and fresh with a pleasing, subtle minerality typical of the varietal. The bitter tannins add nice balance to the ripe redcurrant and juicy blackberry for a rich and fleshy imbibe. Licorice, vanilla and toasted wood linger on the palate to accentuate the long lasting fruit finish.

At 14% ABV, this wine is perfect to sip solo, slightly chilled at around 18°C. Favorable food pairing include fish and shellfish, pastas, rice dishes, lamb, sheep cheese, small game dishes, cooked sausages, and grilled red meat.

Prieto Picudo grapes are a unique varietal indigenous to the D.O. Tierra de León. The pine nut-shaped fruit grows in small clusters on trellised vines. The grapes have bluish-black musts with a sweet, intense aroma. The fruit is high in sugar, acidity and tannins and elaborates intense aromatics in young wines and exceptional characteristics to enable graceful raging.

The grapes are manually harvested, in small batches, at the El Gamonal estate in the village of Valdevimbre, macerated and then placed in stainless steel deposits for a brief malolactic fermentation. The wine is transferred to (60%)French and (40%)American barrels for 12 months of aging in the estate’s underground wine cellar that is more than 300 years old.
