Feudo Maccari Saia 2016

Located at Sicily’s southernmost point, the Feudo Maccari estate is peppered with old Nero d’Avola and Syrah bush vines planted on fertile volcanic soils which give a unique character to their wines. The Saia is crafted from 100% Nero d’Avola sourced from 30-40 year old vines planted on the estate’s higher sites which preserves freshness and balance in the grapes. Following vinification the wine is aged in French oak barrels for up to 14 months followed by a further 6 months after bottling.

The result is a generous, full-bodied red wine which erupts with ripe plum and dark berry aromas overlaid with hints of tobacco smoke, violets, and sweet spices. On the palate there is an abundance of smooth tannins, rich blackberry and blackcurrant flavours, and a very long finish. The bold flavour profile of Saia makes this an effortless partner for strongly-flavoured meat stews or pasta dishes served with a luscious ragu.

The Feudo Maccari property was purchased in 2000 by Antonio Moretti who is famed throughout Italy and beyond for his outstanding Super Tuscan wine Oreno which is made on his Tenuta Sette Ponti estate. Together with his daughter, Monica, Antonio has worked hard to produce equally stunning wines in this corner of Sicily which is blessed with some of Italy’s most interesting terroir.
